HISTORY: The name Gabriel means 'God Is My Strength'. He is the Messenger of God, the Angel of the Annunciation and the Resurrection, ruler of the Cherabim, said to sit at the left hand of the throne of God. Muhammed claimed the Koran was dictated to him by Gabriel. Jewish legend says it was Gabriel who dealt death and destruction to Sodom and Gomorrah. Gabriel appeared to Daniel to tell of the coming of the Messiah, to Zacharias to tell of the coming of John the Baptist and later to Mary at the Annunciation, in which he tells her that she is to bear a child who will be the Son of God and the Messiah.

Gabriel’s symbols are the lily and the trumpet. He is often represented blowing his trumpet to announce the second coming of Christ.
