King Ashurnasirpal Assyrian Wall Relief
This stone relief from the northwestern palace at Nimrud shows two nearly symmetrical carved figures of King Ashurnasirpal II facing a stylized sacred tree and flanked by protective deities. The king in his role as high priest lifts his hand in worship towards a winged disk where the god Ashur (supreme national god of Assyria, or Ashur) resides. The sacred tree represents the fertility of the Earth, especially the land of Ashur.  In Assyrian, the two winged protective spirits are called “Apkalla”.

HISTORY:  Our reproduction is based upon an 865 B.C., 7-foot-tall  wall relief from the city of Nimrud--one of many larger-than-life gypsum wall reliefs from the Nimrud palaces.   Literally miles of these stone relief walls were excavated when the city was uncovered by British archeologist, Austen Henry Layard in the 1840s and 1850s.  Each was inscribed with text celebrating the glories of the king. The best preserved were shipped to the British Museum, where this one resides today, part of the largest collection of Assyrian art outside of Iraq.
