Assyrian/Mesopotamian Art
From the 9th to 7th Centuries B.C., the Assyrians controlled what is today Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and most of Turkey and Iran.  In their homeland (near Mosul in modern-day northern Iraq), they built the cities of Ninevah and Nimrud, and erected grand palaces whose gates were guarded by huge winged lion and bull figures with human heads.  The walls were decorated with stone slabs covered in life-sized carvings of the kings' victories in battle and other exploits, along with scenes of daily palace life. But like many other ancient societies, it was eventually conquered, fell into ruin and lay forgotten beneath the desert dust for thousands of years.  British archeologists rediscovered and began unearthing the ruins in the mid-1800s.  For home decor that echoes the grandeur of those lost cities and palaces, choose from our quality reproductions of Assyrian/Mesopotamian artifacts.
