Asurbanipal Hunting - Wall Fragment
Assyrian/Mesopotamian Art
HISTORY: Based on an ancient artifact in the British Museum of London, our quality reproduction is a fragment from a wall originally found  in Asurbanipal's palace in Ninevah.  This image of King Asurbanipal was part of a larger hunting scene depicting the king hunting wild asses with the help of hounds.

King Asurbanipal reigned from 669 to 626 B.C., when the Assyrian Empire was at the height of its glory.  One of the few kings in the ancient world who could read and write, he established a library in Ninevah that collected all the available literature of the time, and was the first to organize its materials systematically.  He kept the empire under firm control by waging war on the Elamites and quelling a revolt in Babylon.  But after his death, a disastrous serious of wars broke out between his children and the new king of Babylon, and within twenty years, the Assyrian empire disintegrated.
