How Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water Changed The Bottled Water Industry

When 22-year-old Ryan Emmons launched Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water in 2012, he set out to create a new type of bottled water product that would revolutionize the industry. Up until then, no bottled water company had managed to create a product that was socially responsible in every way. Plus, the industry as a whole had been under fire for its negative impact on the environment thanks to the materials from which the bottles were being made.

Today, Waiakea Water is worth over $10 million. The company managed to grow over 4,000 percent in its first three years. By implementing ethical and environmentally-friendly practices, the company has raised the standards of manufacturing for the bottled beverage industry as a whole.

During frequent vacations to Hawaii with his family, he would stop by the Waiakea Springs adjacent to the active Mauna Loa volcano. The springs collect water that has traveled down 14,000 feet of volcanic rock.

As the water trickles down the volcano, it picks up an unusually high level of nutrients including sodium, potassium and magnesium, all essential electrolytes that keep the body hydrated. Additionally, the water picks up a high amount of silica, a mineral that has been shown to improve the digestive system.

According to Crunchbase, Waiakea water is completely sustainable, replenishing itself naturally every month thanks to high levels of rainfall.

The materials used to make the bottles are completely recycled. Compared to the manufacturing processes of other water bottle brands, the process of making Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water uses 85 percent less energy.

The company also has a highly ethical edge. Emmons partnered with the charitable organization Pump Aid to provide clean drinking water to underprivileged regions around the world. For every liter of Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water purchased, the company donates 650 liters of clean drinking water to an impoverished area.

Thanks to Emmons’ emphasis on social responsibility, Waiakea Water is forcing other bottled water companies to raise their standards. Currently, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water can be purchased in thousands of stores across the country.
