The Celts were the ancient inhabitants of much of Europe. A spiritual people, they later merged their rich mythology with the Christian faith they embraced, creating a distinctive art seen especially in Ireland and Scotland. Celtic crosses began to appear in the 5th Century A.D., with a distinctive shape derived from a pagan sunwheel--originally a cross surrounded by a circle with a center stone representing the sun and mock suns at the four quarters. The central sun came to represent their Christian God. The cross represents eternal life, with the horizontal axis as the earthly realm and the vertical axis representing heaven, where they join is the union of heaven and earth. Interwoven knots and spiral motifs symbolize the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Celtic crosses often incorporate images of the crucifix, Biblical patriarchs and saints.

From an 800 A.D. original in County Roscommon, Ireland, this Celtic Crucifix incor-porates the traditional motifs of spirals and interwoven knots into its design. #C-004S, 12" tall.
