Donatello's Saint Cecillia, Patron Saint of Music
Reproduced from Donatello's exquisite bas relief of Saint Cecillia, one of the most revered maiden martyrs of the early church. Cecillia, a patrician young woman, was arrested for helping provide proper burials for martyred Christians. Ordered to sacrifice to pagan gods after her arrest, she refused, and was killed. She was named patron saint of music because it was said she sang praises to God as she lay dying. It is believed Donatello's original may reside in the University of Toledo Museum of Art collection in Ohio. #R-011S, 10" tall, 7.5" wide.
