HISTORY: In Greece the sphinx was represented as a winged female, and its image was often placed on grave monuments to guard the dead. The original on which our reproduction is based was a finial on a 530 B.C. marble grave stele. The 13-foot statue now resides in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
