Reproduced in cultured marble from the 12th Century original in the Archepiscopal Museum, Utrecht. The most revered icon in Constantinople, it was called the Hodgetria (Showing the Way in Greek) Symbol of the city, it was carried in processions and into battle. The original icon was lost in the sack of Constantinope in 1453.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help is the title given to the Blessed Virgin after a 15th century Byzantine icon painted in gold. The earliest written account about the image is from a Latin and Italian plaque that was placed in the church of Saint Matthew where it was first venerated by the public in 1499.
