by Studio Ann Carleton. Richly detailed resin chessmen, hand-finished to mimic dark walnut and light oak wood pieces. The kings are 3-1/2" tall, pieces have 1-6/8" bases. HISTORY: Discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis (largest of the Outer Hebrides Islands in Scotland), the original Isle of Lewis Chess Set is one of the most remarkable and mysterious artifacts from the medieval age. The pieces were discovered quite by accident when a sand bank receded and uncovered them. Their precise history is unknown, but the pieces exhibit a Scandinavian workmanship with interlocking animal and floral patterns, and compact figures dating back to the mid-to-late 12th century. The originals--a beloved and unusual set carved from walrus ivory--are housed in both the British Museum and the National Museum in Edinburgh.
