BIBLICAL HISTORY: The Last Supper is the traditional Passover meal that Jesus ate with the Apostles the night before his death. At this supper, according to the gospels, Jesus blessed bread and broke it, telling the disciples, “Take, eat; this is my body.” He then passed a cup of wine to them, saying, “This is my blood.” Jesus’ words refer to the crucifixion he was about to suffer in order to atone for humankind’s sins.
He told the Apostles, “Do this in remembrance of me.” The actions of Jesus at the Last Supper are the basis for the Christian sacrament of Holy Communion or the Eucharist, in which the faithful partake of bread and wine. According to tradition, the Last Supper took place in what is called today The Room of the Last Supper on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.

About the Original: DaVinci's original 15th century mural, created in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie of Milan, is 29 feet wide by 15 feet tall. The painting, which covers the back wall of the church's dining hall, has suffered considerable deterioration over the centuries. Because of the method used--DaVinci sealed the stone wall with a mixture of gesso, pitch and mastic, then painted directly onto the sealing layer with tempera--the painting has not withstood time well. Two earlier copies of the painting--probably the work of DaVinci's assistant--are known to exist. The copies are almost as large as the original, and have survived with much of their original detail intact.
