Seti I Offers Maat to Gods - Extra-large Wall Relief
Based on a 1317 B.C. Original in the Temple of Abydos, this detail from a larger scene shows Pharaoh Set I offering a small statue of Maat to the Gods. Symbolic of his authority to enforce law and maintain order, this is a great choice for legal or judicial offices. One of our largest wall reliefs at 38" tall by 20.5" wide, this dramatic image is sure to catch the eye wherever it is displayed.
HISTORY/MYTHOLOGY: Here, Pharaoh Seti I, (the father of Ramses II) is seen offering to the Gods the seated image of Maat, held in his hand like a doll. The Goddess Maat is the personification of all the elements of cosmic harmony as established by the Creator-God at the beginning of time, including truth, justice, law, world order and moral integrity. She is shown as a lady wearing on her head an ostrich feather. This scene establishes the king as the representative of divine order since Maat was seen as legitimizing his authority to govern and to uphold the laws of the universe which she embodies.
