These photos of Egypt's famous Giza Sphinx show the immense scale of the ancient sculpture. (notice the people in the foreground near the front paws). In 1867, only the statue's head, neck and part of the shoulders had been unearthed. People had made efforts at excavating the vast figure since 1400 B.C, but the entire figure was not uncovered until 1925. Its exact origins, or just how old it is, have been lost in time, but ancient writings referring to the figure show it could date back to 3000 or 4000 B.C.
