This portrait of a notary--or legal clerk, as they're known today--makes a charming accent for a legal or judicial office, whether alone, or as a companion piece to "Legal Consultation" or "Lawyer", our other legal-related litho reproductions in this series.
HISTORY: Daumier had been familiar with the world of notaryship ever since his youth, because for some time he worked as a clerk at a solicitor’s office. The slippers and the richly ornamented long robe were typical of the money-thirsty, 19th Century Parisian notaries of his day.
HONORÉ DAUMIER (1808-1879) French artist, lithographer, caricaturist and painter was famed for his biting satire. He was imprisoned once for six months in 1832 after drawing a cartoon of King Louis Philippe. Daumier produced about 4,000 lithographs and some 200 paintings, but did not receive major recognition until after his death.
