Isis and Selket - Tutankhamun Guardian Statues
MYTHOLOGY: These are two of the four goddesses who protected the four canopic jars which hold the royal viscera of King Tutankhamun (sealed within a gold shrine).
• Selket's responsibility was to protect Qebehsenuef, the demigod guarding the intestines. She is usually represented as a lady with a scorpion on her head, tail raised ready to sting. She also has healing powers over venomous bites and was patroness of magician-medics dealing with poisonous bites. She was also known as “lady of the beautiful house” referring to her association with the embalmer’s tent.
• Isis was regarded as symbolic mother of the king and the “Eye of Ra”. She was worshiped as the “Great of Magic” who protected her son Horus from snakes, predators and other dangers, and would also protect mortal children. The ancient Egyptians regarded the Goddess as the “Eye of Ra”.
• Both are dressed like queens. Khat headdresses adorn their heads and tumble down over their backs; large collars cover their shoulders. Pleated shawls tie at their waists, partially covering the elegant, long pleated robes tied with hanging sashes. Both have their heads turned slightly to one side, as if to ward off some danger.
