Ushabti Statue

MYTHOLOGY: Like the Jewish Golem, the Shabti or Ushabti is supposed to obey the orders of its owner.  In Egyptian mythology, the Shabti--usually a mummiform figurine--was meant to specifically serve one deceased soul--the one whose name is carved into its chest, along with a prayer that it do the physical work needed by the deceased.

Ushabtis were also used to answer in the name of the deceased for the possible actions they had done while alive--that is the origin of the name, Ushabti, meaning “the one who answers”. Whenever the deceased was called in the next world to sow the fields, carry sand, or perform other labors, the Ushabti was supposed to reply, "Here am I' and perform the labors. The best examples--like the one represented here--were inscribed with a version of the sixth chapter (the Ushabti chapter) of the Book of the Dead. It was believed that reciting the text would make the figure come alive to carry out the obligations asked of it by the deceased in the afterlife.  Here the Ushabti holds a pickaxe and an adze.
